SUSPENSION OF NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP WILL DEFEAT THE AIM OF THE NYSC SCHEME.

A thread My attention has been drawn to the proposal submitted to president Mohammadu Buhari, to suspend NYSC orientation camp for two years because of the effect of COVID-19 on the economy.
The mission of NYSC is to mobilize and groom graduate youths for the promotion of national unity, sustainable development, self reliance and to prepare them for the challenges of leadership.
The mission of the nysc scheme is achieved by:
- Bringing young graduates from every part of the country together for three weeks, this helps in promoting national unity because this young people use this period of camping to interact with each other, learn the culture and behavior of other people as well as coexist in harmony with people from diverse economic and religious backgrounds.
- The skills acquisition program (SAED) organized by the NYSC mgnt in collaboration with the federal Government during the orientation camp help the young graduate to develop relevant skills and entrepreneurial mindset needed to tackle the challenges of unemployment in Nigeria.
3.The Series of lectures taken by the graduate during the orientation camp help to prepare the young graduates for the challenges of leadership in the country.
4.The training given by the military and para military during the orientation camp help to instill discipline on the young graduates which is essential to cub the growing rate of crime in the country.
These are obvious reasons why the orientation program should not be suspended, because suspending it will defeat the aim of the Entire NYSC scheme as all the above mentioned benefits of the camping program cannot be achieved when young graduates are posted directly to their place of primary assignment.
I therefore urge the economic sustainability committee to look for other options rather than suspending the Orientation camp because the NYSC orientation camp is an integral part of the scheme.
