Every batch, the same scams come back with new names. They work because prospective corps members are anxious, deadlines are tight, and the person on the other end sounds official. Here is what to watch for, and the one rule that beats all of them: NYSC does not charge for anything in the mobilisation process except the optional courier fee for your call-up letter.
1. “Call-up letter reprinting”
Someone offers to “reprint” or “reissue” your call-up letter for a fee, usually because you missed the printing window or made a mistake. Your call-up letter is on your dashboard; if it is not there, only your school’s student affairs office or the NYSC state secretariat can fix your record. Nobody with a WhatsApp number can.
2. Senate list “upload”
“Your name is not on the senate list, pay ₦X and we will upload it.” Only your institution uploads senate lists. If your name is missing, go to your school. Anyone else asking for money is guessing your name will appear in the next upload anyway.
3. Cyber-café registration
Not always a scam, but the biggest source of ruined service years. Agents register you fast and wrong: wrong date of birth, wrong course, wrong graduation date. NYSC will refuse to register you at camp if your call-up letter’s graduation date does not match your statement of result, and corrections now require a WAEC verification PIN. Register yourself, slowly, on the portal.
4. “Choose your state” and “PPA connection”
Deployment is done by NYSC’s system, with a small number of concessions for marriage and health handled after camp through the portal. No one can sell you Lagos. The “PPA connection” version sells you a posting to a bank or oil company; what you get is nothing, or a forged letter that gets you into trouble at the LGI’s office.
5. Fake NYSC job and allowance portals
Sites and pages that look like NYSC and ask you to “verify your account” or “claim your backlog allowance” with your BVN, bank login or card PIN. NYSC’s only portal is portal.nysc.org.ng, and it never asks for a PIN. The allowance is paid to the account you registered; there is no separate claim.
6. Accommodation deposits before camp
Agents in WhatsApp groups take deposits for rooms near your camp or in your posted city before you arrive. Pay only when you have seen the room, or through someone you personally know in that town. Camp gives you three weeks to look properly.
7. Fake NERD, medical and “clearance” agents
Any “clearance slip”, medical certificate or verification that someone offers to obtain for you without you being present is either unnecessary or forged. Medical fitness certificates come from a government hospital, with you in it.
What NYSC never charges for
- Registration, senate list, call-up letter (except optional courier delivery)
- Deployment, relocation, redeployment, PPA posting or reposting
- Monthly clearance, biometric capture, discharge certificate
If you have been scammed
Report to the NYSC state secretariat and to your bank immediately if money left your account. Then tell the community, so the next person doesn’t fall for it. Telegram is the fastest place.
